Habit Loop

Habit Loop

You don't quit the cigarette. You quit the person who needed one.

The self-reinforcing cycle of cue, routine, and reward that makes behaviours (good and bad) extraordinarily difficult to change. Smoking's genius is that it turned a medical hazard into a social identity. You can't break a habit by removing the routine; you have to replace the identity it was serving.

TL;DR

The self-reinforcing cycle of cue, routine, and reward that sustains behaviours by tying them to identity rather than just action.
